Lincoln Southwest and Blair become back-to-back champions while Friend enjoys their first state softball title at the State Softball Championships.
The Championships were held in Hastings at the Bill Smith Softball Complex. All three classes finished up in one game on Saturday - no teams played in 15th games.
In Class A Lincoln Southwest played Lincoln North Star. Both teams had to defeat Omaha Westside to advance to the championship game. Southwest scored two runs in the 3rd inning, and held on to their 2-0 lead until the 6th when Mallory Nesson scored for North Star. Southwest hung on and their pitcher, Becca Changstrom, pitched the final strike to Brooke Bernadt, ending the game and giving Southwest their second championship in two years with a final of 2-1 in seven innings.
Seward and Blair played each other again in for the Class B title. The two teams played Friday night going into 12 innings with a 0-0 score. Saturday's game looked like it might be headed in the same direction when the score was still 0-0 after seven innings. During the top of the 8th Blair's Jordan Rasmussen hit a the sacrificial bunt to move their runner off of second, but Seward erred with an overthrown ball to first base. Rasmussen turned the play into a double, and Sarah Rome scored for Blair. Seward stepped up to the plate, but couldn't get on base, and Blair became the new Class B champs with a 1-0 win.
Friend took on Wayne in the Class C title game. The game looked to be a close one with Friend and Wayne each scoring one run in the 1st. Friend went on to win 3-1 in seven innings, taking home their first softball championship trophy in the school's history.
