The Cardinals of Hayes Center only scored two touchdowns in their Class D-2 semifinal game against Pleasanton Monday, but that proved to be enough as the Cardinals advance to their first state championship appearance in school history.

Keifer Messersmith had 33 carries for 269 yards and the only two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to the win.

Hayes Center head coach Scott Jorgensen commented on the win, “Tonight’s win against a very physical and athletic Pleasanton team is a culmination of several items. Since we began this journey in August, we have been trying to instill in the boys on functioning as a unit and taking care of your responsibilities."

"We did all of those items very well tonight. We did a great job of keeping our heads and executing to the best of our ability. As we prepare for our final game this season, it is important that the boys continue that same mentality. I am very proud of what we have accomplished, but we realize we still have more work to take care of.”

Hayes Center outgained Pleasanton 328 to 140 yards on the ground.

The Cardinals will face Humphrey St. Francis next Monday, November 23 at 10:15 a.m. to decide the Class D-2 Championship at Memorial Stadium.
