Another type of nontoxic shot is available to waterfowl hunters in Nebraska and other states.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has approved for immediate use tungsten-iron-polymer shot for hunting waterfowl and coots. There now are 12 types nontoxic shot approved for loading into shotgun shells for hunting.
Nebraska law says only nontoxic shot may be used for hunting waterfowl, and nontoxic shot is required for all shotgun hunting on federal waterfowl production areas and national wildlife refuges.
Researchers say lead shot is toxic to birds and that ingested spent lead has killed scores of migratory birds.
