Academics are hugely important, but popularity among classmates can also ensure your child has a successful school year.

Lincoln Public Schools Social Worker, Nancy Bare says school teaches kids social skills like being respectful and getting along with others.

"Socialization and friends are so important to how kids enjoy school," said Nancy Bare.

"It's a huge learning for later in life and how to get along with people and so it's important and parents should really talk about it with their kids," Bare said.

She said parents should encourage their children's friendships.
She said you should set aside time to talk to their kids about who their friends are, why they are friends and then routinely ask about their friends.
