After seeing video of the Missouri River flooding, a few members of the 10/11 Cares team made a spontaneous road trip to help the sandbagging effort. We passed through NE City (which coincidentally was host to a Can Care-a-Van stop that day). The volunteers in Percival, IA (just outside of NE City) directed us to Hamburg, IA. It was a little bit of an adventure trying to find a relief effort where we could help. Thanks to a kind Hamburg resident who actually ESCORTED us to a school parking lot where we could help. We worked alongside one of the city councilman, who was one of the friendliest guys you’ll ever meet. When I asked him how he could be so cheerful despite the flooding conditions and spending a few days straight sandbagging in 100+ degree heat, he just shrugged & said something to the effect of “There’s no use being grumpy about it!” Although we could only stay for a very short while, it was a good experience.
