Two Nebraska students who won a singer/songwriter competition will join a performance by Susan Werner on Friday at the Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Shannon Kelly of Pius X High School and UNL student Rachel Whelan will perform as the opening acts for Werner, a Chicago singer who is known for blending folk, blues, gospel and jazz.

Kelly is a senior at Pius X, where she is active in theater, show choir and student council.

Whelan, originally from Denver, says she has had a life full of regrets, heartbreak and bad haircuts, which she channels into music.

Dale Bazan is the assistant professor of practice in the UNL School of Music. He says there is astounding young creative talent in Nebraska
