Central Nebraska Humane Society Nears Adoption Goal

The Humane Society set a goal for 2012: to find loving homes for 1,050 shelter pets. So far this year, the Humane Society has already surpassed their adoptions numbers from last year.

"We just now hit our record from last year of 1,026. So from now on, anything over that is just gravy," said Laurie Dethloff.

Laurie Dethloff is Executive Director of the Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island. She says Facebook and social media have played a big part in getting the word out there and helping to keep adoption numbers up.

"The internet is making a tremendous difference because you can look at home. Not everyone is always comfortable coming to a shelter. And then when you get here and see how it feels like an adoption center, it makes things so much better," said Dethloff.

And that's exactly what Jamie Suck and her family did in search for a family dog.

"I was online quite a bit with all the different shelters. We finally stopped in here yesterday and fell in love with Lacey," said Suck.

Suck says she has two little ones and wanted to by-pass the puppy phase.

"We tried to find a dog that would be friendly with them and she seems to be," said Suck.

Although they are close to their goal, Dethloff says there are always more animals looking for a home.

"As excited as we are to hit this goal, the backside is that we have other animals waiting to get in. There's always more homes needed," said Dethloff.
