From Chimney Rock to Omaha: Chapman native Tyler Pool is running across Nebraska for a special cause.
"I'm trying to raise awareness and some donations for the Megan Foundation which supports research for Usher's Syndrome which is the leading cause of deafblindness in the world," says Pool.
This cause is especially important to Tyler and his family.
"My brother was born completely deaf which was hard enough for us," says Pool, "that's not something you really expect ever in a family. It's hard on the family. It's tough enough when people don't have one sense, but when you start to lose another one, I can't even fathom. A lot of times I think that's not fair that I have all of mine and he's missing two of his, but it's tough and I kind of use that as motivation when I run."
Tyler's mother, Lisa, has been with him every step of the way riding in a car in Tyler's path to keep him hydrated and replenished, even if she was surprised at the idea at first.
"I think he's crazy," she says, "but I think a lot of people think he is. No, really, I'm very proud. It was kind of a whim sort of thing. He just one day said, 'I'm going to run across the state of Nebraska!'"
Tyler says he'd love to have people join him as he runs to Omaha, but if you can't join him, there is another way you can follow him.
Tyler says, "I try and update my Twitter two or three times a day. I'm pretty new at it. It's @Poolie_Express. And you can just follow at it, I'll find you and you can see where I'm going and what I'm doing."
And Nebraska is just the start for Pool. He says he has much bigger plans in the future.
"Here in a couple years," says Pool, "I'd probably like to get a group of guys together and kind of challenge ourselves and each pick a good cause and probably try and run across the United States."
