The Homestead National Monument in southeast Nebraska is seeking volunteers to carry state flags for the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act.
The act was passed in 1862 to provide federal land to the public. A celebration is planned for next year to commemorate its passage.
The monument is seeking volunteers who received land or who are
descendants of those who received land through the act to carry flags for events on May 20 and June 16.
Volunteers are needed for the 30 states recognized in the act, including Nebraska neighbors Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota and Wyoming.
