Six months after a fire destroyed part of Holly Hasbrouck's house, the Kearney mom of five said her family is ready to move back in.

"We are at the point where we got power and utilities restored, and we're almost able to stay there, and one of the things that we were lacking was just a couple of beds," Hasbrouck said.

On Tuesday, Hasbrouck got the beds her family needs thanks to Slumberland Furniture's "Making Home for the Holidays" program.

"Ecstatic, appreciative, grateful, thankful, especially given today is the 11th of December, exactly six months," she said.

This year, the Kearney Slumberland worked with social workers from Kearney Public Schools to choose the families.

"Families that have experienced some sort of hardship one way or another and maybe have some increased needs. A lot of kiddos that do sleep on the floor, on the couch, that don't have the resources available to them to have a bed," said KPS social worker Melissa Craig.

Dozens of volunteers showed up with trucks, ready to help Slumberland deliver mattresses, box springs, frames, and pillows. They delivered 17 mattress sets to 12 KPS families. And on Wednesday, the Slumberland in Grand Island will continue to spread the joy by giving beds to 26 families in Grand Island Public Schools system.

The store owners have been making these donations for 15 years and said it's just the perfect way for them to help those in need.

"We feel it's a niche that we happen to have. I want the children to know that it's a true gift from God, and it's our mission outreach program for the communities that we serve," said owner Gayle Bonnes.

Those getting the beds said it's just another reminder of the wonderful community they live in.

"Sometimes it's hard to be on the receiving end of that, because you don't know what to say other than "thank you" and "we're grateful and appreciative of it," Hasbrouck said.

But now, they can be back in their own home and with new beds, just in time for Christmas.
