Many families have their own ways of giving back around the holidays. For the Novotny's, it's participating in the annual "Gifts of Love" program which helps low income families to buy deeply discounted items for their kids.
More than 900 volunteers spent the past week selecting and organizing gifts for 500 eligible families to purchase through "Gifts of Love". Parents shopped for more than 1500 kids this year.
8 year-old Gavin Novotny has been teaching his 6 year-old brother the ropes. He's been volunteering for "Gifts of Love" event for the past three years.
Gavin says "We try to make that happen, to get them the gifts and what not. I think we can help them out once in a while, so we do this and I hope other people will too."
"Gifts of Love" helps families who couldn't normally afford holiday gifts buy them at deep discounts. The idea is to give the families a "hand up" not a hand out".
City Impact still needs donations for an upcoming event that lets kids buy gifts for their parents with "Monopoly money" earned by doing chores throughout the year.
