The Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity has been helping people achieve home ownership for two decades now, but that's not all the chapter is celebrating this week.

Building a home isn't usually a speedy project, but the Grand Island Area Habitat plans to finish one in less than week.

"It's quite a feat to get it done in three - three and half days," says Amos Anson, Habitat's Construction Manager. "It helps when you have all professionals and they all get along and everyone knows their job and they just come and do it, that's a huge help."

Nationwide more than 200 homes will go up during the Home Builders' Blitz this week. The Grand Island Area Habitat says their blitz build is made possible thanks to great local support.

"By coupling the people who are the professionals with the suppliers we're able to build this house [for] much less than we would normally," says Dana Jelinek, Executive Director of GI Area Habitat.

The blitz build home's owner, Maria Garcia, says she and her daughter have been praying for a home of their own. Over the next few days the answer is materializing right in front of them.

"So excited, I'm very happy because it's a dream come true," says Garcia. "I never [thought] the house was going to be but now it's true, I see my house."

Habitat officials say all their homes are only possible because of the volunteers who help build them.

"I'm a landscaper that's never framed a house before so anyone can do it," says Jeremy Vlcek, a Habitat volunteer helping with the blitz. "You can do anything from cleaning up to getting food to framing to nailing - if you're scared about doing it just ask, someone's always here to help you too."

The GI Area Habitat is also celebrating 20 years since their first home was built. This week when they finish the blitz build home, officials say the mortgage from the first home will also be completely paid off.

To celebrate the completion of the blitz build home and the mortgage burning, Habitat will be hosting a block party on Saturday from 2-6pm at Trinity Methodist Church in GI.
