Students at one Lincoln school wanting to make a difference in their community have received a special gift for their school.
After two weeks of voting, Irving Middle School is one of eight schools to receive a $25,000 grant to use for technology.
The grants are provided to schools by the Windstream SchoolsWin program. Students were encouraged to organize and complete community improvement projects. Those students who did the most in helping their community became finalists for the grant.
It all started when an 8th grade class put together a video encouraging their classmates to participate in community service.
The whole school got involved, volunteering in a variety of ways to help the community.
Teacher Troy Hassebroek entered the video for the contest.
He says it has taught the kids the value of helping others.
Irving was the only winner of four area finalists for the grant. Other area finalists included Crete Middle School, Fairbury High School, and Auburn High School.
