Pitching in to help a fellow church member -- it's something that congregants at one Kearney church did again on Sunday.
A benefit lunch and silent auction was held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church to support member Sharyn Neben, and to help her pay medical bills for heart disease and other ailments.
About two hundred and fifty people participated in the event.
Congregants say mutual assistance has become part of their church's playbook.
Event organizer Tammy Hayden: "This is probably the fourth benefit over the last four to five years for different members, and we're always willing to step up to that."
Holy Cross Lutheran Church Pastor Duane Duley: "Our group called the 'Faithful Servers,' they get it all organized and everything. And the people just show up. They support their fellow members, they support people of the community. They have big hearts, and we're so thankful for that."
Donated salads and desserts complimented the fried-chicken benefit lunch. Up for sale at the auction were seventy-five donated items, including musical instruments, furniture, and one very large piggy bank.
The event raised a total of about seven thousand dollars.
