Law Enforcement want to prevent pill abuse and theft with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Lincoln/Lancaster County Narcotics Task Force will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Prescription Take Back Initiative.

It will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Bring your medications for disposal to the following Walgreens sites:

Walgreens 8300 Northern Lights Drive (84th & Holdrege)
Walgreens 2630 Pine Lake Road
Walgreens 4000 South 70th Street (70th & Pioneers Blvd.)
Walgreens 1404 Superior Street

The Nebraska Attorney General's Office is also sponsoring a location at Guardian Angels Homecare, 3200 O Street.

To check for the nearest collection site in your community go to www.dea.gov.

School Community Intervention Program (SCIP) volunteers will be present at the Walgreens sites to provide information and resources about at-risk teens.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods of disposing of unused medicines (flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash) pose potential safety and health hazards.
