Nebraskans with private water wells can have their drinking water tested for nitrates during Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is offering the free tests at the event on Sept. 13, 14 and 15.
Well owners can bring a cup-size water sample in a clean bottle to the Natural Resources Tent, Lot 1018, at the northeast end of the Husker Harvest Grounds.
Tests will be available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Nitrates pose a potential threat to infants younger than 6 months old, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Livestock are also susceptible.
The tests are sponsored by the department's Division of Public Health.
