Bill to modify hazing law passes final reading

Nebraska lawmakers approved a bill on Thursday that would change the current hazing laws.

Senator Dan Hughes introduced the measure and says lawmakers approved it unanimously.

Currently, the hazing law is only limited to college students. This bill would change it so that the law would include middle and high school students.

This proposal hits close to home for Sen. Hughes, after high school students in his district were accused of hazing and couldn't be prosecuted because of the law.

Hughes says after introducing this law he received many phone calls from educators and parents about how big of an issue hazing is in our state.

The bill now heads to the governors desk to be signed into law.
