GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A former Grand Island Police officer has been convicted on a lesser charge in a case that dates back to last fall.

Michael Lyon, 31, was originally charged with misdemeanor third degree assault in connection with an October 30 assault reported by a 26-year-old Grand Island woman.

Prosecutors reduced the charge and Lyon this week pleaded no contest to an attempted misdemeanor.

Police said the event did not occur while the officer was on duty.

Lyon is scheduled for sentencing in May and could get as much as six months in prison and a $1,000 fine.
