Jazz in June kicks off in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Along with summer heat, June brings to Lincoln the annual Jazz in June class and concert series. Tuesday is the first day of the summer that musicians will be performing at the North Plaza of the Lied Center.

The concerts will take place every Tuesday in June. The night's festivities begin with a market put on by the vendors from the city at 5 p.m. and the concert will follow at 7 p.m.

This is the 26th year that Jazz in June will fill downtown Lincoln with music and fun. This year is special; for the first time ever for the classes, masters of jazz are teaching them. Tuesday, LaFrae Sci and Sonic Black taught a class at the Glenn Korff School of music.

LaFrae Sci is well respected throughout the jazz world. She is the founder of the NGO Groove Diplomacy, whose mission is to create youth engagement programs internationally using musical expression as a vehicle to empower, ignite, heal & create mutual understanding. She has performed with music greats including Cyndi Lauper and Pinetop Perkins.

The mission for Jazz in June this year is to continue to grow in Lincoln. At the first concert in 1991 there was an estimated 500 people in attendance. Last year, crowds of more than 1,000 gathered to enjoy music made by artists from across the country.

Organizers suggest bringing a blanket or lawn chairs for comfort.

The event is free to the public. But free will donations will be accept to help fund the events.

There are no pets allowed at the event.
