Lance's Journal: Gerda's German Restaurant, Sept. 8, 2017

This story all got started in a land far away from here. Gerda Bailey was born & raised in Augsburg, Germany and she spoke only German when she met and fell in love with an American soldier who was serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany. Gerda recalls it clearly, "We went out with a bunch of girls, you know how that is. We saw a bunch of G.I.'s on the street and they say, 'Hi girls' and we start talking, didn't speak any English...and this is how I met my husband."

Gerda's new husband brought her to America in 1963, "I love it. I love this country...I do."

Eventually, Gerda and her husband settled at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue and Gerda looked into buying a bakery in Omaha, "We came up here and we talked to the owner at that time it was $33,000 in 1976."

Gerda decided to pay that $33,000 for the business in 1976 and she's been going strong ever since.
