Man placed on mental health hold after screwdriver stabbing

HASTINGS, Neb. Hastings police are investigating a Sunday night incident in which a man was stabbed in the nose with a screwdriver.

Police say the incident happened just before 11:30 PM in the 200 block of east seventh street.

A man broke into the home and got into a fight with a resident there. During the fight, the man reportedly stabbed the resident in the nose with a screwdriver. The victim, Nicholas Lowery, 36, refused medical treatment.

Police were investigating the motive, but reported that the victim and the suspect were former roommates and that the suspect's estranged wife was living with Lowery at the residence.

Police arrested the suspect and placed him on mental health hold. The hold means that he will be held in a secure location until such time as he can be evaluated by the Adams county mental health board.
