PERU, Neb. - A Peru State College football player was killed during an accident on Highway 75 on Sunday.

Justin Haystrand, a former offensive player of the year on Peru State’s football team, was transported by medical helicopter to a Lincoln hospital after the 4:30 a.m. crash south of Nebraska City.

He was riding in a Honda Accord driven by teammate Andrew Shackelford, who was taken to CHI Health St. Mary’s by rescue squad.

The Accord collided with a Chevrolet Blazer driven by 37-year-old Chrystal Davenport of Brock after the Accord left the highway and returned into Davenport’s lane.

The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office reports that blood tests were taken and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The school was notified of Haystrand's death on Monday.

Peru State College will hold a vigil for Justin Tuesday. It will begin at 6:15 p.m. on the Peru State campus. A memorial service is then planned for Wednesday.
