Pottawattamie County reserve deputy killed in hit and run

KANSAS CITY, MO. (WOWT) - Just before 11:00 p.m. Saturday evening the Missouri Highway Patrol responded to a pedestrian being struck and killed at the intersection of I-70 and Woods Chapel Road.

The pedestrian was 39-year-old Jeffery M. Koontz, of Council Bluffs. Koontz was a reserve deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office.

The Highway Patrol says the unknown semi driver that hit Koontz fled the scene.

Two other vehicles, a 2008 Chevy Equinox and a 2007 Saturn Ion also struck Koontz.

Those drivers stopped and are cooperating with police.

Koontz was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation into the accident is underway.
