NIOBRARA, Neb.- There are many unique golf courses in the state of Nebraska, and many times they are found off the beaten path. The Tatanka Golf Club on the Santee Sioux Reservation near Niobrara is one of those fantastic courses.
"This course is owned and operated by the Santee Sioux Nation," Tatanka Golf Club General Manager Justin Kitto said. "(The course) is very big. We have good greens, 3, 16 and 2 share a fairway so that is pretty unique. Overall, it's a very nice course. The layout is beautiful."
Visitors from across Nebraska come to play a round of golf at Tatanka. But people come from other states as well like South Dakota and Iowa. "I think overall when people think of Nebraska courses, they think flat," Kitto said. "When you look out here, the camera really doesn't do it justice. When you get out there, there are not too many flat spots out there." Kitto added that the length of the course and the greens can be challenging.
The course is a part of the Ohiya Casino and Resort. Their is a hotel on site, and on the golf course itself there is a restaurant and even a pro shop. When you are at the Tatanka course, you are getting away from it all. "Our next biggest city is really Norfolk, so it's truly a destination course," Kitto said.
