Truck driver cited in deadly crash

OMAHA, Neb. -- James Helbert, 57, has been cited for misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide and Careless Driving in connection with a deadly traffic accident on Highway 75 on January 5th.

The crash happened shortly after 3 a.m.

Shamus Dean, 47, of Papillion and Khalil Shemar Jones, 19, of Florida, were killed in the crah.

Bellevue Police were called to investigate a three-vehicle collision in the southbound lane at the entrance to the Chandler Road exit lanes.

Investigators say a Pontiac Grand Prix had stalled on the road there. The vehicle was registered to Jones, an active duty member of the Air Force stationed at Offutt Air Force Base. Two passengers were in the car: Tyquan Malik Petty, 18, of Omaha and a 15-year-old Omaha girl.

Their car was stopped in the turning lane. Hazard lights were not activated. Shamus Dean pulled his Chevy truck to the side of the road to assist with the stalled car. No hazard lights were activated on the truck.

Helbert, of Bellevue, was driving an AR Tow Truck southbound that crashed into the Pontiac and the Chevy.

Khalil Shemar Jones and Shamus Dean died, Tyquan Malik Petty was seriously injured but has since been released from the hospital and the 15-year-old girl remains under medical care.

The crash remains under investigation.
