SCRIBNER, Neb. If you’re looking for a place to sit down, enjoy some good food and take in some local history, Z’s Bar and Grill in Scribner, Nebraska is the place for you.
Scribner is in Dodge County, 20 miles northwest of Fremont on Highway 275.
The building where Z’s Bar and Grill is located has a very long history. It housed an opera house, grocery store and even an auto parts shop before becoming the restaurant it is today.
“In 1898, it was built to be the Soll Opera House,” said Ryan Zahourek, owner and manager of Z’s Bar and Grill.
Zahourek says the original wood floors and stage are still intact in the upstairs portion of the building.
The opera house was just the beginning for this historic building. In the years following the sale of the opera house, the building served as a bar, grocery store, and Napa Auto Parts.
“Napa Auto Parts was open until 1998,” said Zahourek. “It was then purchased by another family. They turned it into a ‘Paper Dreams’ business. When the Napa Building moved across the street, those owners turned it into a steakhouse.”
After watching the building change while growing up, Zahourek says when the building came up for sale again three years ago; it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
“It’s just cool because I grew up here so I saw what the town was, and it’s cool to see all the people who are coming back to town and seeing what we have to offer.”
Z’s Bar and Grill serves everything from chicken wings to prime rib and burgers. They’re open Wednesday through Monday.
