Choir teacher Mrs. Scheel was honored for her hard work and dedication at the Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council Awards Banquet that took place Saturday, April 4 at Riverside Country Club. Scheel won the Larry Maupin Education Award. The award is given to an organization or an individual in education who has promoted the arts through a lifelong devotion to increasing students’ arts awareness and their personal participation. She was one of three recipients of the award from the Hall county area.
“It was a very big surprise for me. I was very humbled and honored to receive the award,” Scheel said.
Larry Maupin started the strings program at Senior High and worked there for thirty years until he retired. Maupin is now battling pancreatic cancer but still found the strength to present the award to Scheel and the other recipients.
Scheel said the feelings she felt were indescribable to receive the award from him especially given the state he was in. It showed how much he really cared about his work.
Scheel has only been at Central Catholic for four years but has already done so much in the music department.
“Mrs. Scheel is so dedicated to music and her students. She’ll do anything and everything possible to insure they do well. Her schedule is a constant frenzy but she always makes time for music,” senior Kate Harris said.
