Many Nebraskans are gearing up to celebrate Independence Day this weekend, but already the holiday has become a nightmare for some pets.
Whitney has no problem with storms, but fireworks send the dog into hiding.
"[She] doesn't want to go outside and if she does go outside it takes a lot of coaxing. We go outside, do what we need to do, run back in as quick as we can, and jump on the couch," said Robyn Mays, Whitney's owner.
"We're seeing more and more dogs not wanting to go outside to go to the bathroom, and so just take that into consideration that you're going to have to go out with them," said Laurie Dethloff, executive director of the Central Nebraska Human Society.
Fireworks have already sent some pets to the humane society.
"We've had some runners but we've been trying to get everybody to check their fences, check to make sure everything is secure, make sure you have your tags on," said Dethloff.
Even if your dog or cat lives inside, fireworks could still affect your pet.
If they get really irritated you may want to contact your veterinarian.
"The vets have medicine that they can give them to help keep them calm," said Dethloff.
If your pet has no problem facing a 4th of July light display, Dethloff says you may still want to keep them away from the festivities by taking them inside or putting them in a kennel.
"If they chase them, they can explode in their mouth. They can catch fire," she said.
Dethloff also says fireworks can cause hearing loss in your pet, but explosives aren't the only danger.
Independence Day activities like grilling could also be dangerous for pets.
For instance, consuming lighter fluid could make them sick.
