For Santiago and Reyna Chavez and their family Saturday was the last step in realizing their dream of owning their own home.

Habitat for Humanity's 52nd partner family home is now the Chavez home. A dedication ceremony was held at Lincoln Elementary, followed by an open house at the residence. In just a few months the Chavez family, along with volunteers and Habitat builders, went from looking at a hole in the ground to standing in front of a house ready for them to move in.

The Chavez home is the third home that the Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity has completed this year. Home #53 is under construction in Aurora, and GI Habitat executive director Dana Jelinek said they hope to pour the foundation for Home #54 yet this fall. Jelinek said that last year they were able to complete six homes, and the economy has definitely been a factor this year. As construction has slowed many builders have taken on lots of smaller projects, and finding someone to help do a large project, like a house, is difficult.

Home #52 was build with volunteer support from the community. Funding for construction came from other partner family mortgages.
