From GIPS Press Release:

Usually, groups of students such as Student Councils organize food drives at schools. But Dodge Elementary School fifth-grader Mariah Buettner has taken sole responsibility to organize a school food drive as a class project.

The food drive began this week and continues through Nov. 18, said Dodge Assistant Principal Tina Mason. Buettner will present the food to the Salvation Army in time for Thanksgiving. Buettner will feature the food drive in her entry for the Nebraska Digital Media Awards, co-sponsored by Apple Computer and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Education and Human Services.

The purpose of the contest is to showcase the best digital media work by students in kindergarten through 12th grade in Nebraska.

Buettner is working under the guidance of Jan Tell, integration specialist at Dodge, for the contest entry. Buettner has prepared notes to be sent home to parents, asked physical education teacher Ryan Hansen to promote the food drive in his classes, arranged for an incentive for the class that collects the most items, recorded a Connect-ED phone message that is transmitted to all Dodge families, and made posters to hang around the school. She is also collecting and tabulating the results when students arrive at school.
