News Release from Educational Service Unit 10:

Educational Service Unit 10 is expecting more than 400 students from 19 area schools as they compete in the 21st Annual Regional Science Olympiad on March 16, 2010 from 8:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska, Kearney.

Students will compete in active, hands-on group events that range from bridge building to disease detectives – all of which tests the students’ science knowledge and engineering skills.

One of Science Olympiad’s main goals is to bring academic competition to the same level of recognition and praise normally reserved for athletic competitions.

Much like a football or soccer team, competitive Science Olympiad teams prepare throughout the year for tournaments.

Bob Lungrin, Department Director of Professional Development at ESU 10, says “Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today and by providing group learning through this event we offer students a chance to develop their talents.”

Participating schools from Middle School or Jr. High and Senior High levels include: Alma, Amherst, Anselmo-Merna, Arcadia, Elba, Grand Island Northwest, Gothenburg, Greeley-Wolbach, Kearney Horizon, Lexington, Loup City, North Loup-Scotia, Ord, Paxton, Ravenna, S-E-M, Skutt Catholic – Omaha, Spalding and St. Paul.

“ESU 10 would like to thank the University of Nebraska at Kearney for providing the facility and help with coordination of events, Nebraska Department of Education for hosting the state competition and area teachers who serve as coaches as well as judges for this competition,” says Gaylene Mays coordinator of the Science Olympiad. “Together, we work to make this a fun, educational and successful tournament.”
