G.I. Senior High School students compete in robotics tournament

The Grand Island Senior High Robotics team competed in the Midwest Vex Robotics Tournament on Feb. 27 at Mount Michael Benedictine High School in Elkhorn and received one of the four trophies awarded.

The Islanders received the "Sportsmanship Award" trophy for their performance and ability to work with other teams with whom they were paired during competition rounds. Twenty-two teams competed.

Grand Island Senior High School team members included: Guadalupe DeLeon, John Hambug, Alexander Lubrano, Jordan McElligott, Michael McElligott, Matt Wagner, and Joseph Weber. Team coaches were Kris McElligott and Julie Hehnke.

Team members were responsible for the design, building, and programming of a robot that would be able to compete in the Vex Robotics game that required robots to be able to pick up as many balls as possible, ranging in sizes from softballs to soccer balls, as well as blocking opponents from scoring. Top teams received scores from their competition performance as well as from points received from the team interview by a panel of judges regarding the team's knowledge about the scientific concepts involved with the design of the robot.
