From the Neb. Dept. of Natural Resources:
FEMA and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources Begin Floodplain Mapping for Big Slough Watershed near Dannebrog
The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NDNR) met with Howard County officials and interested citizens on November 18, 2010 to kickoff NDNR’s floodplain mapping project for the Big Slough Watershed near Dannebrog.
The study will be performed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by NDNR. The study’s purpose is to examine and map flood hazard areas in the watershed that includes part of Howard County and to carryout the floodplain management objectives of the National Flood Insurance Program. The floodplain maps will also be used as the basis for determining appropriate flood insurance premium rates for buildings and their contents.
As part of the study, the public is encouraged to present any relevant facts and technical data concerning local flood hazards to county officials, including the county commissioner and floodplain administrator. The information will then be forwarded to NDNR.
The Big Slough Watershed maps will be prepared under authority of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968, and the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973.
