A march to champion Gay rights is set for Saturday afternoon in Grand Island. The march will start at Pier Park at 1pm, continuing to the Grand Island Courthouse before turning around and finishing at Liberty Statue..
Emmii Ulmer is the organizer of the march. A 14 year old lesbian, she said it's time for people to begin acknowledging Gay culture.
"Some people are for it but other people are not. I'm used to hearing the criticism.
Ulmer said intolerance from classmates prompted Ulmer to organize the march.
"The thing that hurts the most when they say [insults], is that they don't know me. It makes me angry but sad at the same time that they're so close minded."
Amy Van Pelt aided Ulmer in putting the march together. Van Pelt said the march will be a good start to bringing awareness of Gay rights issues to Grand Island.
"I think this isn't something that happens around here. It's really amazing. I never thought something like this would occur in Grand Island."
Ulmer started a Facebook page for the march which had over 300 members planning to attend. A rally for a straight rights march page was created in response.
"I just want people to know it's ok to be gay. There's just nothing wrong with it," said Ulmer.
