In the race for Grand Island mayor, Jay Vavricek beat Robert Meyer with 61 percent of the vote.
After the votes came in, Vavricek says he was restless on election night. He already has a to-do list.
"I'll reach out to people, council members, city staff, starting to make some transition efforts so once you assume the office in December then you're off and running," he said.
Replacing a City Administrator Jeff Pederson will have to wait until December, Vavricek says. Pederson recently announced he'll be leaving Grand Island for another job.
Vavricek says staffing will largely drive the budget this next year. He also says he won't raise property taxes.
"First we'll make sure our revenue stream is sound. Sales tax revenue appears to be on the rebound so hopefully that will continue. I know property tax valuation will increase slightly so that'll be a boost," he said.
Vavricek is no stranger to Grand Island City Hall. Eight years ago he had just won his first mayor race. He says he'll bring the experience from that first term to this one.
"That experience is invaluable. Will I do things differently? I think I'll continue to promote open government, work well with people, then we'll see to what degree council supports recommendations that I make that may be different than in the past," said Vavricek.
Like Vavricek has, mayoral candidate Robert Meyer will now be taking at least the next two years off.
"I'm really not ready to quite yet," he said. "Maybe in two years if Mr. Ramsey doesn't run I might run in his sport again for the Third Ward. We'll just have to wait and see."
Meyer will leave the city council as Vavricek is sworn in in December.
