Grand Island Public Schools students are participating in a number of activities on Wednesday, March 2, to celebrate Read Across America.
The National Education Association’s Read Across America is an annual reading awareness and motivation program to celebrate reading on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
Students at Gates Elementary School at 2700 W. Louise St. selected their favorite Dr. Seuss books and participated in a door-decorating contest featuring their favorite Dr. Seuss books. Members of the Nebraska Danger football team will read to students and interact with students at lunch and recess between 10:45 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. March 2, Principal Julie Martin said. Students were asked to wear Nebraska Danger team colors (blue and lime green) to school on March 2.
Dodge Elementary School students are participating in Wacky Dress Day on March 2 at their school at 641 S. Oak St. Their clothing can include silly socks, mismatched clothes, two different shoes, crazy shoes, or anything else that is “wacky,” Assistant Principal Tina Mason said. Dodge is also hosting “Rock and Read” on March 2. Adults and students have volunteered to “man” a rocking chair in the school’s front hallway so they are “rocking and reading.”
Dodge is also hosting an all-school read-in at 10:30 a.m. March 2. Students made signs that said, “SHHH…we’re reading!” They can sit on towels and read. Students planned to sit outside, surround the school, and read. If weather doesn’t permit that plan, students will read inside in the hallways, Mason said.
Dodge students will wear read and white on March 3 to honor Dr. Seuss. March 4 is “Hats Off to Reading” day at Dodge, and students may wear hats on March 4, Mason said.
