Zach Maloley's 4th quarter touchdown run proved to be the only points in Kearney's Week 0 win over arch-rival Grand Island. Maloley broke through on a 6-yard run and the Bearcats hung on behind its dominating defense.
"You have two great defenses," Kearney head coach Brandon Cool said. "We knew we were good coming in and Grand Island was good."
There were few scoring chances in the game, and even when Kearney lined up for a first-half field goal, it didn't result in points. Grand Island blocked the attempt, keeping the game tied at 0-0.
Kearney put itself in position to crack the ice late in the third quarter when quarterback Taylor Fish coompleted a 35-yard pass to Tyler Shields. The big play led to Maloley's heroics.
" We were just fortunate enough to score that 1 touchdown and win 6-0," Cool said.
