Nomination letter by Daniel Moeller, a senior at Logan View Public Schools:
Throughout a person's life, they meet many people. Some of these people have a very long lasting impact on their lives. I have had the privilege of meeting one of those people. His name is Duane Carlson. He is the Technical Arts teacher at Logan View Public School. He is also the junior high football, wrestling and track coach. He used to coach high school football and wrestling. He has taught at Logan View for 30 years. He also taught over in Iowa for 3 years, together that is 33 years. He is set to retire this year.
This man has had a huge impact on not only my life but also the life of others. If someone in the school needs some advice on a situation, it's this guy. He is always giving students advice. He has given me many bits of advice from wrestling to track. He has always been there for me when I have needed him and when anyone else has needed him.
While I was in junior high I was a shy guy. Mr. Carlson talked to me and soon we became friends. All my life I had played basketball, but I had an interest in wrestling. I told him about this and he asked me why I hadn't tried wrestling. I responded by saying I was afraid to, I was afraid that I would get made fun of. He just smiled and laughed at me and said trust me, you won't get made fun of. So I went out for wrestling. My first match I didn't have a clue what I was doing and I lost horribly, but I loved it. From that point on, I gave up my career as a basketball player and started to be a wrestler.
He spends eleven hours a day at school. He gets there at six and leaves at five. He opens the school up for people and always stays after if someone needs help. He has never turned down someone if they needed help with something. The guy just doesn't know how to say no, no matter how much is on his plate, he just won't say no. Whether it be they need help on their car, or they need a speaker for a pep rally the guy always says yes.
Many Logan View alumni come back to school to visit, and the first person they usually go to is Mr. Carlson. They all want to see him again. They all tell him thank you for all that you did for me, they were better prepared for life and they got to where they are in life because of him.
Mr. Carlson is one of the best teachers that Logan View has ever had. He has impacted my life greatly, as well as many others. He will forever go down in history as the guy who made Logan View what it is today.
