Nomination letter by Makenna Volzke, an 8th grader at St. John Lutheran School in Seward.
I am nominating Mrs. Elizabeth Obermueller for the Golden Apple Award because she is a wonderful teacher.
Mrs. Obermueller has been a teacher for 31 years. She has been the 8th grade teacher at St. John Lutheran School in Seward for 26 of those years. During those years Mrs. O (that's what the students call her) has not only been a great teacher in the classroom but she always seems to do extra little things for the students that most teachers wouldn't do. She has the 8th grade students study Greek Mythology and perform a play in the fall of their 8th grade year. She explains how live theater began in Greece and then she serves the students an authentic Greek meal following the play. Even though we didn't like all of the food it was fun to try something new.
Mrs. O is also the coordinator for the student council that meets every Friday before school. She makes it fun, even though we have to get up early, and always has a treat for us. Part of being the Student Council coordinator is being in charge of the concession stand during home games. Mrs. O had a new concession stand put in this year and worked to get everything put in and ready. She also works the concession stand during games.
Another huge project that she has put together for many years is the 8th grade play. She finds a play that will work for the number of students in 8th grade. Even though some of us don't like being on stage it gives us a chance to experience it and decide if maybe it is something we would like to try in high school. In Seward High School, a lot of the kids involved in the musicals and drama are St. John graduates and Mrs. O deserves a lot of credit for exposing us to doing a live production. She has a hand in all aspects of the play production from set design, directing, costumes, sound, etc. It's a ton of work and although she gets help from parents, the majority of the work is still done by her.
Even during the regular school year there are many evenings that you can drive by the school at night and see Mrs. O in her room working and getting things ready for the next day. She definitely enjoys being a teacher and makes it fun to be in her class.
This year Mrs. Obermueller announced that she is retiring and this will be her last year of teaching. It will be sad to see her go but I feel so lucky that I got to have her for my last year at St. John. She has some big shoes to fill.
