Every hour in the US someone is newly diagnosed with Multiple Scerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system.

The National MS Society will hold events March 8-14 across America to educate the public about multiple sclerosis (MS).

Wednesday, more than 55 volunteers from Grand Island and Hastings joined other advocates in Lincoln as they marched to the capitol building in an effort to educate the public about the disease.

About Multiple Sclerosis
Every hour in the U.S., someone is newly diagnosed with MS, a chronic disease of the central nervous system. There is no cure for MS and there are over 400,000 Americans affected by this disease. Multiple Sclerosis is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although individuals as young as 2 and as old as 75 have developed it.

The volunteers wore orange scarves as their voice

All week long, MS societies across America are holding similar events to educate the public about the central nervous system disease that affects more than 400,000 Americans.

The volunteers roamed the halls of the capitol building wearing orange scarves as a reminder to state leaders that the disease affects thousands throughout Nebraska.

"Our goal is to help generate as much awareness as possible about the disease and ensure that people throughout the state know that the National MS Society exists to help those with MS," said Lisa Brink, president of the National MS Society Nebraska chapter.

There are additional opportunities to get involved with Walk Ms or Bike MS events. Ten Nebraska communities will hold walks beginning on April 17th, with walks in Grand Island, North Platte, Scottsbluff and Sidney. Bike MS, a cycling event from Omaha to Lincoln, is July 10-11, 2009. Funds from these events will be used for programs and services throughout the state of Nebraska.
