Comfortable seating is key for husker football games.

But a big change for chairback seats in Memorial Stadium brought big problems Saturday.

As husker fans streamed through the gates of memorial stadium for the season's first football game, a pre-game highlight was a comfy new chair.

"They look much better, they're softer they got a nice back. I think it's much improvement over what they had last year," said Rosemarie Mares, clenching her chair in hand.

The University bought 18,000 new chairback seats for fans to rent this year for $5 a piece. They boast thicker cushions and fiber glass backs.
But, with the new chairs, comes a new rule - leave your personal chairbacks at home. That doesn't sit well with some fans.

Phil Patterson of Omaha said, "The whole idea stinks". He's been coming to Husker football games for 40 years and always brought his own chairback seat. He said having to rent one means he has to come to the stadium earlier to ensure he gets a chair.

Others say they don't mind because they always rent the extra piece of comfort.

"Oh that doesn't bother me. You know so much changes and if you don't just accept it, you get mad and then that's not good either," said Sharon Hecht of Hastings. Although she does have mixed feelings on the design of the new chair. "I like the fact that they're sturdy and that people can't push up against you but they don't fold up and that makes them harder to carry."

Chip Dodge thinks the new chair policy is a good idea.

" I like the idea that all the seat backs will be the same and that the new chairs have a hard back on them too," he said.

The hard backs became hard to get though, just before game time Saturday. Volunteers at a number of entrances, ran out of chairs to sell. The volunteers were instead, holding chairs for season ticket holders who paid in advance.

Tracey Pickett was among the fans turned away because she didn't have a "Grab & Go" voucher. She said volunteers told her the voucher can only be purchased by season ticket holders, which she is, but says she wasn't made aware of the option to pay for the chairs in advance.

"I was excited about trying the new seats and obviously we won't get that opportunity," said Pickett.

After a while, even those people with the vouchers were left standing with no chair to sit on.

Volunteers in charge of renting out the chairs said they couldn't answer questions about the problem but noted that they never had a shortage last year and that the first few games are a bit of a trial period as the university figures out the demand for the rented chairs.

"The process is flawed a little bit. They need to have a way to get the grab & go tickets and scan them. That way they'd know how many they have left and how many are gone and how many they still need to get seats for," said Dave Burk, another fan angry over the inconvenience.

ok ppl. if the UNL is going to make us rent the seats well how about this. Have enough seats for everyone that goes to the home games. if they r going to make the fans leave their seats @ home, then seats should b provided to everyone. just not fair to the fans that sit thru a whole game some with and some without seats. my opinion is that i'm happy sittin on my own comfy couch watchin the game. Now, movin on....

why not just get a real team to cheer for and then you wouldn't have to worry about these stupid chairs

I want to propose an idea, since we are talking so much about money. ALL Nebraska tax payers get access to OUR Husker tickets. Basically, your name goes on a list, and every game 80,000 people or so have first choice at FREE tickets. That means every Nebraskan gets to go to roughly one game a year. Can you think of a better way to increase spirit for our team? U of N is a public university. The entire public should be allowed to participate in its greatest asset. Do you agree with me? WOO HOO!!

Yah, charge them to go to rest room.. they can afford it. In fact charge those people two times the cost for a ticket.

@T, I don't think Memorial Stadium is going to charge to use the bathroom. Bathrooms are provided for everyone. These seats, however, are above and beyond, meaning not everybody uses them. That was the case with the old seats; that is the case with the new seats. I wouldn't worry too much about it. But on the note, Who goes to the bathroom while OUR Huskers are on the field?!! Stay in your seat!! ROOT ON OUR BOYS!! Bathrooms at Memorial Stadium are for emergencies only, as I see it. WOO HOO!!

What next charging to go to the restroom.

Amen, Husker Grad. That's what I'm talking. See my earlier post. HUSKER FANS SHOULD STAND DURING THE GAME!! Let's keep the energy level in the stands up so our boys keep the energy level on the field up. It's that simple. GET YOUR HANDS UP!!

what a bunch of cry babies. you don't like the new seats? don't rent them. and no, don't bring back the old ones. they took up more space than is designated for each person. if you want a comfortable seat, stay home. duh.

Why are we wanting chairs to sit on? Real Fans will stand and cheer the entire game. We will be in the Big 10 next year...lets show them that great fans stand and cheer on the team.

I don't like this chat room. How can you complain so much? OUR Huskers won a hard fought battle against a premier team. YOU GOT TO GO TO THE GAME. You witnessed history. Isn't that reason enough to celebrate - just being there? I bet there are a lot of people in Husker Nation that would LOVE to have your tickets - comfy seat or not. LET'S FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE, PEOPLE!! OUR HUSKERS WON. I worry this negative energy is going to affect our boys' performances next week. Let's start saying positive things. That is what we can do to help OUR Huskers win! GET YOUR HANDS UP!!

Just another way UNL jacks up ticket prices if you ask me! Honestly now! They should have took the wrecking ball to Memorial Stadium long before they decided to remodel it and during the process installed actual stadium seats for people to sit in! Joining the Big 10 was a GREAT move, now long time season ticket holders will get to see higher quality teams added to the schedule rather than the usual San Jose State, South Dakota St., Western Kentucky, etc., etc. Sorry folks! It's hard to get excited about playing those types of teams! We have a top notch program, the greatest fans in college football, and are annually forced to see the Huskers play a one or two game schedule!

I don't think they should have them at all. They take up too much room from the person who sits behind you. Leaving no room to put your knees. They make it hard to walk down the aisle because there is no room. I feel like a dentist sitting behind people in those seats. FACT: The stadium ailes are not built with enough room for those chairs, otherwise every seat would have one! You should have to be 60 years or older to get one.
