An 80-year-old Iowa man is in critical condition after walking into the tail rotor of a helicopter on Wednesday.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office said Robert Smith of Tabor, Iowa was touring flooding along the Missouri River.

Authorities say the private helicopter had just landed near Smith's house and he walked out to meet it.

Officials say Smith apparently didn't see the rotor and was hit in the face.

Authorities say Smith has been hospitalized and is in critical condition at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
