The worm is called rbot.equ or zotob. It was causing computers all over to reboot or shut down all together. Kristan Yoder owns Quick Connect in Lincoln. It's a computer fixing business. He says the virus was exploiting the vulnerability of Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003 and some XP. Yoder tells us this virus could have been avoidable if people would update their computers on a regular basis. This virus is not believed to have that much of an impact on your computer.
Kristan Yoder says there are several things to you can do to protect yourself. First find a virus protection system that you like and know how to use. Before you run the scan, disable your computer's system restore. Then run your virus when you are in the safe mode. You can put your computer in safe mode by pressing F8 when it turns on.
If you don't do this, Yoder says the virus will sometimes hide and it will look like it was deleted, but it really wasn't.
Another thing is to set your computer to automatically update. This will then tell you at the bottom of your screen whenever there is a new update available. Then you just click on the bubble and wait for it to download.
Yoder says these steps will help you stay protected. If you need more information feel free to call a computer expert for tips on what to do.
