And we're off! The 2013 'Go Red' Challenge has officially begun!
On Tuesday, August 20th, the group met for the first time at Madonna ProActive. Everyone was greeted by the team that will be assisting their goals.
Nurse Sharon Duffy explains, "It's a 12-week program that includes a lot of education, a lot of support, and a lot of motivation for these women to change their lives - to be healthier."
Besides weekly meetings, numerous resources are available to the women throughout the process. Personal training sessions, meetings with a dietician, a membership to Madonna ProActive, and accessibility to a chiropractor at Synergy. Additionally, the Nebraska Heart Institute is tracking each woman's progress through blood tests. Each woman was given their initial results during the orientation and will again be tested at the end of the 12 weeks to see their progress.
There are 6 women participating in Lincoln. Four were chosen by attending the casting call held in July. Two, including 10/11 Anchor Abby Turpin, are members of the media, participating to bring widespread awareness to the importance of taking care of our hearts. So, without further ado, time to meet this year's participants...
Beth - "My main goal is to get heart-healthy and to lose some weight. I have a milestone birthday coming up. I want to be in shape, be healthy - make the second half of my life the best half of my life."
Linda - "My husband passed away from cancer at the end of February and the last 6 months of his life, he just kept saying to me, 'I want you to get healthy, I want you to get healthy.' And so this is my commitment to him."
Jessica - "I think the biggest goal that I have is to learn how to be healthy, so that when it's time to have children, I already have that accomplished and have mastered that, so we can live a healthy lifestyle together."
Marie - "I am currently on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I would like to at least get those medications down to something less powerful - and to lose some weight."
Nikki Oswald - Host, B107.3 - "I'm actually training for a marathon right now, so I want to be as healthy as I can be for that. And for my future kids!...that I don't have brewing right now!"
Abby Turpin, Anchor, 10/11 News - "I ran a half-marathon a couple of years ago, and my goal is to run the Lincoln half-marathon next May."
So, wish us all luck! Every 2 weeks, tune in to 10/11 News at Noon and 10/11 News at 5 to follow the progress and adventures of this group of women.
