The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is among eight college campuses in the country to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation.
UNL participates in the Arbor Day's Tree Campus USA program.
On Wednesday, 50 trees were planted and another 50 will be planted in the spring.
The program is designed to not only beautify the environment, but encourage students to plant treets to create healthier communities for generations to come.
"We're encouraging university students to be working with the university, working with the administrators and working with the landscape crews to care for the trees, to help manage the trees and to enforce the tree care plan," said Dan Lambe, Vice President of Programs for the Arbor Day Foundation.
UNL has large expanses of parking lots with little or no shade, so many trees were planted throughout parking areas on the west side of the campus near Memorial Stadium and near the Nebraska East Union on East Campus.
