Fresh off a come-from-behind win there's buzz that the Nebraska football team will possibly get an invite to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida.
Gator Bowl officials met on Monday, but there's still no word on a Nebraska appearance.
However, many Nebraska fans are preparing to watch the Huskers play in person...no matter where that may be.
Lincoln travel agents have been busy. Steve Glenn of Executive Travel has been preparing bowl trips for many years and even he was surprised Monday morning when the first of his charter flights filled up in less than 2 hours. Glenn says, "I think people miss it, it was part of our culture. You know if you're a football fan and you follow the Huskers you just put that on your calendar between Christmas and New Year's, somethings going to happen and last year we were kind of empty." And that empty feeling led to some full planes, "We've been overwhelmed."
Glenn sees the bowl trip not only as a businessman but also as a former Husker player in the 70's, "I think people are very excited, we're seeing that in the bowl trip and we're just seeing it from the average Joe on the street, they're saying 'Hey, I enjoy watching Husker football again.'"
With the chances looking good that Nebraska will be playing in the Gator Bowl on January 1st, Glenn is encouraging fence riders to make their decision as soon as possible, "I don't think you want to ride the fence very long because number one there isn't a lot of air service to Jacksonville and if you look on commercial flights today those flights are very expensive. That's why the charter flights are probably going to fill up fast is...think about it, if you go to the Gator Bowl it's around New Year's, that's the busiest time of the year for travel a lot of those planes are not going to find $200 to $300 seats, they're going to be $600, $700, $800 a $1,000 tickets for flights."
Glenn says the tours offered by his company will be in the $1,300 to $1,400 per person range.
