A group of senators vowed to take on the problems revealed by the state's safe haven law and today they took the first step.
The Task Force For Children, made up of state senators working with health care and legal experts, held their first meeting at Boys Town in Omaha.
The meeting was the first of three scheduled before the legislature heads into it's new session in January.
The group plans to come out with recommendations for the legislature on how to address what some have called a lack of mental health services for older children in Nebraska.
Senators say one theme evident in the day's conversation was early intervention.
"We talked about resources, early intervention and crisis management," said Senator Amanda McGill. "We broke down into separate groups to kind of look at all of these things and try to approach the situation from different angles," McGill said.
McGill said today was about coming up with general ideas of what needs to be done so that next week they can get down to details.
"Next, we'll get more detailed, looking into who is going to be accountable, what are the measurements to see how effective a system will be , and who should supervise the different plans," said McGill.
The task force will meet again on December 10th.
