Friday marks the one year anniversary of the deadly Von Maur shootings in Omaha. While the day will bring some painful memories, eight families will have to re-live the loss of their loved ones.

48-year-old Gary Scharf of Lincoln was among the eight killed. He had just stopped at Von Maur to do some Christmas shopping when the shots rang out.

Now a year later, Scharf's son is reflecting on the tragic events and hoping a lesson will come out of this.

"We need to go back and look at the circumstances by which Hawkins lived his life, said Steve Scharf, Gary Scharf's son. "Not in any sort of way to continue the pain of what he did, but to make corrections and prevent the same thing from happening in the future. My worry is that if we move forward and we don't learn anything, this will happen again."

A remembrance ceremony is planned to honor the victims Friday in Omaha. People will gather on the south steps of the Von Maur store at 1:30 Friday afternoon. Omaha's mayor and the Von Maur president will be there as prayers and remarks are shared.

My friends mom was in it and she watched her co-works get killed. I think we should never mention Robert Hawkins name again because he said "now I'll now be famous"
