Harold Hamilton is known by many around the Capital City as a man with a big heart. The 86-year-old makes a habit out of buying food and giving it away.
The retired Lutheran pastor has a motto, he says, "I live to give." Many Lincoln charities are also well aware of Harold's charitable nature, he's been filling up pantries for many years.
Harold is a natural born giver. He learned what was important in life early on growing up in Carter Lake, Iowa during the Great Depression, Harold says, "I had two older brothers and myself and I on more than one occasion watched my mother take what she had on her plate and give to my olders brothers or myself and she would just have another cup of coffee, or a second cup of coffee or a third, she liked coffee thank heavens I appreciated that." And he also appreciated her lifelong lessons, "Mother found ways to do little things for people that was important for them and satisfying for her.
Harold has loaded 12,000 pounds of food in his car this year, "I think the important thing in life whether you're younger or older, for life to be important for you have to consider other people and let them be a part of your life."
The Lutheran Food Pantry is just one of the charities that benefit from Harold's generosity. Bruce Otto runs the pantry, "I wish everybody was like him when it comes to helping out and I know I enjoy him when he comes out to where I live, the sermons he gives, the people enjoy the talks he gives he's a really precious man out there."
Giving is not just a Christmas thing for Harold. He's out about every other day, all year long.
