Protesting for peace, that's the message one Lincoln group is trying to spread throughout the Capital City. What started as a few protestors headed up by the Nebraska Coalition for Peace has turned into about 50 demonstrators coming out each week to show their opposition to the war in Iraq. But this message of peace isn't being received by everyone.
Whether it was their first week, or their tenth, one group of protestors all came to get out the same message...end the war in Iraq and bring the troops home. This was Esther Durbin's first week of protesting, but she's no stranger to war times.
"I've been through, since my husband served in World War II, five wars. There's no excuse for that," says Durbin.
Organizers say the group grows each week, and the honks become louder and louder.
"It should tell the policy makers in Washington that the American people and the people here in Nebraska think it's time we brought our troops home," says Mark Weddleton of the Nebraska Coalition for Peace.
"It sting, it stings a lot," says Sergeant Tonjaih Thomas.
Sergeant Thomas says passing by the protestors to pick up his kid each week is difficult, even if these people support the troops just not the war.
"They don't understand that supporting the troops means more than just bringing us home cause you can ask any soldier that's over there, we're not going to come home and we don't want to come home until we're done," says Thomas.
But Esther Durbin says she plans to keep coming every week, because if nothing else, it helps her feel like she's making a difference.
"It means a whole lot to me. It means at least I'm taking a stand," says Durbin.
The Nebraska Coalition for Peace started these protests back in May. They plan to keep doing them every Wednesday at 5:00pm on the corner of O Street and Centennial Mall until the war is officially over.
